Gorge, 2024

This is my second time working with Ingmar Bergman’s film ‘Persona’ in relation to mountains. The first was in 2016, in a short essay film that I made from a collage of still and moving scenes taken from the film, which jumped between silence and sound to mirror a disjuncture that I faced in my practice, when I was, rather bizarrely, trying to build a mountain out of hundreds of baking tins that, inevitably, kept collapsing and engorging me.
On this occasion I’ve appropriated one scene, in particular, from Bergman’s film. Without dropping any spoilers, Bergman’s next scene also plays on the word gorge, but not in relation to mountains, more so, an act of survival.
Gorge, 2024, works with several seconds of Bergman’s film that I have stretched over minutes, which form a series of jumps that draw attention to the frames of the celluloid film strip that Bergman used, way before digital filming was a thing. I have then played with the film as a landscape, by flipping it upside down to switch the viewpoints of each person and emphasise the chasm that had formed between the two individuals within the film.
